We have had a successful start to our new project with the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), helping more than ninety dialysis patients during the first month.
The contract allows for our team of specialist welfare rights advisers to visit patients at the nine satellite dialysis centres run by UHB and provide detailed advice and support whilst they are receiving treatment.
“This is extremely rewarding work,” says project leader Mark Smith. “Patients attending the centres for haemodialysis will have had their lives disrupted by the treatment that involves long stretches of dialysis three times a week.
“We advise patients on the welfare benefits that they are entitled to alongside any grants or funding that may be available from organisations such as the British Kidney Patient Association. We work with patients to ensure that they can access help and not just tell them what is available, this often involves completing forms and sometimes taking cases to tribunal.”
The project runs for six months and we look forward to helping many more patients during this time.
